FBR has scheduled a 52.5-hour service interruption

The Federal Board of Revenue announced on 24 July 2026 that planned system maintenance will run from 12:30 a.m. on Saturday, 8 August, until 5:00 a.m. on Monday, 10 August 2026. FBR says the affected services are expected to resume immediately after the maintenance is completed successfully.

This is an operational notice, not a change to a tax rate, filing rule or statutory deadline. However, the interruption is material for taxpayers and businesses that rely on FBR's online systems for time-sensitive filings, payments, registrations and transaction records.

Which services will be unavailable

FBR's press release identifies five services that will be temporarily unavailable during the maintenance window:

  • IRIS, used for income-tax registration, returns, statements and related submissions.
  • Digital Invoicing, used by integrated businesses to transmit invoice information.
  • The Payment System, used for tax-related payment activity.
  • Synchronized Withholding Administration and Payment System, commonly known as SWAPS.
  • POS Registration for point-of-sale integration.

The notice is limited to these named services. It does not say that every FBR or Pakistan Customs platform will be unavailable, so businesses should avoid assuming that systems not listed in the release are affected.

What taxpayers and businesses should do before 8 August

FBR has advised taxpayers and stakeholders to complete time-sensitive filings, payments, registrations and other transactions well before the maintenance begins. A practical preparation checklist is:

  • Identify any filing, payment, withholding, invoicing or POS-registration task planned for the maintenance weekend.
  • Complete urgent submissions early rather than waiting until the final hours before the outage.
  • Save acknowledgements, payment receipts, submitted-return copies and other system-generated evidence after completing a transaction.
  • Make sure the people responsible for tax, payroll, accounts receivable and retail systems know the outage window.
  • If digital invoicing or POS integration is part of daily operations, review the applicable continuity procedure and keep complete transaction records during the interruption.

The press release does not announce an automatic extension of any legal deadline. Taxpayers should therefore continue to work against the applicable statutory or officially notified due date unless FBR separately publishes an extension.

Why the timing matters

The maintenance starts shortly after midnight at the beginning of Saturday and continues through early Monday morning. That means the affected systems will be unavailable for the whole weekend and will return, subject to successful completion, before the normal Monday working day.

Businesses with weekend retail activity or automated tax-system connections may need more preparation than taxpayers who only use IRIS occasionally. The important distinction is that the underlying compliance obligations continue even while the named online services are temporarily unavailable.

Final rule or proposal?

Neither. This announcement is a final operational schedule issued through an FBR press release. It is not a draft proposal, and it does not amend tax law. It tells users when specific services are planned to be offline and asks them to complete time-sensitive work beforehand.

The bottom line

Plan to treat IRIS, Digital Invoicing, the Payment System, SWAPS and POS Registration as unavailable from 12:30 a.m. on 8 August until 5:00 a.m. on 10 August 2026. Complete urgent work early, retain proof of completed transactions, and monitor FBR for any later change to the maintenance window or a separate deadline announcement.
